What is the x-coordinate of the point on the x-axis that is equidistant from points A(-2,8) and B(0,4)?

Let  the  point  be  ( x , 0)

 

So....by  squaring  the distance  formula we  get  the equation

 

(-2 - x)^2  + ( 8 - 0)^2   =  (x - 0)*2  + ( 4 - 0)^2     simpify

 

x^2 + 4x  + 4 +  64   = x^2  + 16

 

4x +  68  =  16

 

4x =  16 - 68

 

4x  =  -52

 

x =  -52/4 =  -13
