What is the x-coordinate of the point on the x-axis that is equidistant from points A(-2,8) and B(0,4)?
Let the point be ( x , 0)
So....by squaring the distance formula we get the equation
(-2 - x)^2 + ( 8 - 0)^2 = (x - 0)*2 + ( 4 - 0)^2 simpify
x^2 + 4x + 4 + 64 = x^2 + 16
4x + 68 = 16
4x = 16 - 68
4x = -52
x = -52/4 = -13
