In the diagram, the four points have coordinates A(0,1), B(1,4), C(5,3), and D(4,0). What is the area of quadrilateral ABCD?

Here is ONE way .....calculate the area of the red rectangle ...then subtract the 4 triangles

 

5 x4     -  2 * 1/2 (1 * 3) -  2 * 1/2 (4 * 1) =   20 - 3 - 4 = 13 units 2             as TA  posted !

The answer is 13 units squared.

You have to count and then do some division.
