In how many ways can 8 people be seated in a row of chairs if three of the people, John, Wilma, and Paul, refuse to sit in three consecutive seats?

There are 6*3! = 36 ways for all three people to sit together, and 8! without any restrictions.  So by complementary counting, the answer is 8! - 36 = 40284.
