What is the radius, in inches, of a right circular cylinder if its lateral surface area is 3.5 square inches and its volume is 8.5 cubic inches?

Lateral surface  area  =  2pi r * h

 

So

 

3.5  = 2pi r *h         solve for h

 

h =  (3.5) / (2 pi r)

 

Volume =  pi r^2 * h

 

So

 

8.5 =  pi * r^2  *  (3.5) / (2pi r)       simplify

 

8.5  = (3.5) / 2  *  r

 

8.5 = 1.75 r

 

r = 8.5  /1.75   ≈   4.86  in
