what is the difference between sin x and sin^-1(x)?

Sin^-1(x) is the exact inverse of sin(x). It is called arcsine of x. Example: sin(x)=1/2. What is sin^-1 or the arcsine of x? If you use a calculator, you will see that the arcsine of x, or of 1/2 in this case, is 30 degrees.

You use sine if you have the angle and you are looking for a side.

You use inverse sine when you need to find the angle.
