I am confused by the equal sign. Did you enter an "=" sign instead of a "+" sign (they are both on the same key)?

If the problem is to find the remainder of (4x4 + 3x3 + 2x2 + 1) / (x - 1) by direct substitution, you need to find f(1):

f(x) = 4x4 + 3x3 + 2x2 + 1   --->   f(1) = 4(1)4 + 3(1)3 + 2(1)2 + 1  = 4 + 3 + 2 + 1  =  10   --->  so the remainder is 10.

Notice that you need to find f(1), NOT f(-1).

The rule:  if the problem has division by x - a, find f(a); if the problem has division by x + a, find f(-a).
