I know that there is a proof, but why does 0.9 repeating equal 1? Since they are labeled differently, shouldn't they be different numbers?
+130518 Here is a method to convert any repeating decimal to a fraction :
1. Write the non-repeating part of the decimal and append the repeating part and drop the decimal.......for convenience......we'll call this 99...[there isn't any non-repeating part, here]....it won't make any difference how many more 9's we append, as you shall see
2. Subtract the non-repeating part from this........in this case, there is no non-repeating part.......so we still have 99
3. Write the same number of 9's as we have repeating digits and append the same number of 0's as the non-repeating digits........we only have 2 repeating digits and no non- repeating ones..........so, this ends up being 99
Put the result in 2 over the result of 3 and we have:
99 / 99 = 1
To show that this works.....consider .127272727.......etc. .....we would have [ 127 - 1] / [ 990] = ,127272727........
