6 - 2(x - y)  =  -3x + 5

First, get rid of the parentheses by using the distributive property:

6 - 2x + 2y  =  -3x + 5

Get rid of the 6 from the left side by subtracting 6 from both sides:

-2x + 2y  =  -3x - 1

Get rid of the -3x from the right side by adding 3x to both sides:

x + 2y  =  -1
