(3 - 8)/(-8 - y) = -3/4 ==> y = -44/3

I believe the answer you provided was incorrect although I could be mistaken. I believe the equation is (y2-y1)/(x2-x1).

slope = - 3/4   = (y1-y2)/(x1-x2)

                        = (-8-y)/(3-5)

                  6/4 = -8-y

                   y = -8 - 6/4 =   - 9 1/2
