Do you mean for simultaneous equations like these?

 

\(5x-3y=8\quad(1)\\ 12x-3y=5\quad(2)\\ \mbox{Here you would subtract because }-3y- -3y=-3y+3y=0 \\~\\ 5x-12x-3y- -3y=8-5\\ -7x = 3\\ x=-3/7\)

 

Then sub in to find y  :)
