In the equation y = 0.5*1.21^x, represents the number of snowboarders in millions and represents the number of years since 1988. Find the year in which the number of snowboarders will be 10 million for the first time. (Only an algebraic solution will be accepted.)

10 =  .5  * 1.21^x      divide  both sides  by  . 5

 

10/.5     =  1.21^x

 

20  =   1.21^x      take  the log  of each side

 

log 20   = log 1.12^x            and  by a log  property we  can write

 

log 20   =x  * log 1.21       divide both sides  by   log 1.21

 

log 20  / log 1.21  =  x   ≈  15.7 years  =  16  years

 

So

 

1988  +  16   =     2004
