Is it impossible to raise a number to the power of 2 and a value less than the orginal number?

Sure !!!......consider....

 

(1/2)^2  = 1/4       and  1/4 < 1/2

 

In fact, if the base is  > 0 but < 1, this will always happen.....!!!!

The first guest was incorrect, listen to what cphil said.

If the base is negative...

Say -1

-1^2 = 1

1>-1

This happens with all negative numbers squared, or put to the power of an even number.  <3
