If I do a positive number with a negative exponent won't the answer be positive? Ex: Negative 5 to the 2nd power

Yep.....it's still positive.......

But.....you're asking about taking a negative to a negative power......if the power is even, the result is positive.....but, if the exponent is odd, the result is negative....Example :

(5)-2   = 1/(5)2  = 1/25

(-5)-3  = 1/(-5)3   = -1/125
