Suppose you want to simplify 10^3 / 10^2 . You just subtract the index 2 from the index 3 to get 10^1 which we know is just 10.
Now take 10^3 / 10^3. This time when you subtract indices you get 10^0. But 10^3/10^3 is just 1,as is any number divided by itself. So any number to the power zero is just 1 .
