Aida is learning how to play tennis. The perimeter of her tennis court is 228 ft. She would like to find out the width of the tennis court to have a better idea of her distance covered during a tennis match. The length of the court is 42 ft shorter than the width. Create an expression only using w, width of the court, to represent the perimeter of the tennis court. Choose the expression below that correctly represents this perimeter.

Call the width of the court          W

Call the length of the court         W – 42

Perimeter  =  2L + 2W

Perimeter  =  2(W –42) + 2W

228  =  2W – 84 + 2W

228 + 84  =  2W + 2W

4W  =  312

W  =  312/4

W  =  78

L  =  78 – 42

L  =  36
