f(x) = x + 2 g(x) = 2x − 1 The two equations above define the functions f and g. If f(a) = g(a) for some number a, what is the value of a?

f(a) = g(a)

So

a + 2 = 2(a) - 1

Add 1 to both sides.

a + 3 = 2a

Subtract a from both sides.

3 = a
