6x² + 10xy - 4y²

= 2 (3x² + 5xy - 2y²)

= 2 (3x² + 6xy - xy - 2y²)

= 2 (3x (x + 2y) - y (x + 2y))

= 2 (x + 2y) (3x - y)

I JUST had a problem like this yesterday!!

So I coppied it from my work. Hopefully It's right!

Factor the following: 6 x^2+10 x y-4 y^2 Factor 2 out of 6 x^2+10 x y-4 y^2: 2 (3 x^2+5 x y-2 y^2) The coefficient of x^2 is 3 and the coefficient of y^2 is -2. The product of 3 and -2 is -6. The factors of -6 which sum to 5 are -1 and 6. So 3 x^2+5 x y-2 y^2 = 3 x^2+6 x y-x y-2 y^2 = x (3 x-y)+2 (3 x-y) y: 2 x (3 x-y)+2 y (3 x-y) Factor 3 x-y from x (3 x-y)+2 y (3 x-y): Answer: | | 2 (3x-y) (x+2y)
