Find the number of fractions less than 1 such that, in lowest terms, the denominator is 1000.

 

I tried to work on this problem and I got 985 fractions. It is wrong.

No! The answer is 400.

 

You take ALL the odd numbers between 1 and 1000 and you have 500. From that you subtract 100 numbers that end in 5, such as 5, 15, 25, 35.......etc.

So, 500 - 100 = 400 such numbers.
