Let x represent the length of DB.

AC =  √(16+ 122) = √400 = 20

CB = √(x2 + 122)

AB = x + 16

Note that △ABC is right, meaning that AC2 + CB2 = AB2.

Substituting values for AC, CB, and AB, we get:

202 + [√(x2 + 122)]2 = (x + 16)2

400 + x2 + 122 = x2 + 32x + 256

544 + x2 = x2 + 32x + 256

544 = 32x + 256

288 = 32x

x = 9

Therefore the length of DB is 9.

DB / 12 = 12 / 16

DB = 144 / 16

DB = 9
