Why are you using pi - there are no circles here.  It is not a cone!

Volume of a square pyramid

$$\\V=\frac{1}{3}*l^2*h\\\\
1024=\frac{1}{3}*l^2*12\\\\
1024=4*l^2\\\\
256=l^2\\\\
l=16inches$$

The volume of a square pyramid is given by

V =(1/3)* pi * s^2* h         where s is the side length and h is the height......so we have

1024 = (1/3) (3.14) (s^2) (12)   simplify

1024 = 12.566 *  s^2         divide both sides by 12.566

1024 / 12.566  = s^2         take the positive root of both sides

s = 9.03 inches
