Here it is with synthetic division....

1       1   -1    1   -1   1   -4

               1    0    1   0    1

       --------------------------

        1     0    1    0   1   -3

The resulting polynomial   is   x^4 + x^2 + 1    with a remainder of  -3/(x - 1)
