|x|   means the ABSOLUTE VALUE of 'x'      so   + x     or  - x    the ABSOLUTE VALUE is 'x'

2|x|-8 = -4   add '8' to both side to get

2|x| = 4       Divide both sides by '2' to get

|x| = 2         SO the absolute value of 'x' is '2'     so x can be either 2 or  -2       Does this make sense to you??
