log (256) = log(2^(n-1))

log(256) = (n-1)log(2)

log (256)/log(2) = n-1

8=n-1

9=n

256=2^n-1

2^8 = 2^(n-1) Equate the exponents

8 =n -1          Add 1 toboth sides

n = 9
