4x + 2 (15 – x) = 44
4x + 30 – 2x = 44

x = 7 horses
x + y = 15 ==> y = 15 – x
y = 15 – 7
y = 8 chickens

Does 7 (4) + 8 (2) = 44
28 + 16 = 44
