Fiona keeps her pencils in a cylindrical beaker as shown below. The beaker has a diameter of 8cm and a height of 17cm. Willa pencil of length 19cm fit in the beaker without poking out of the top? Please show all of your working out.

I don't see any diagram, but.......if we took a cross section of the cylinder, the longest pencil that could fit  would form the hypotenuse of a right triangle with the other two legs =  8 and 17..........and the length of this hypotenuse =

 

sqrt [8 ^2 + 17^2]  =  sqrt [353]  = about 18.8 cm

 

So.....a 19 cm pencil will not fit.....!!!!
