Using a 600lb drop hammer against a metal plate, how many pounds of force am I imparting on the object I am hammering?

F = ma

force is equal to mass times acceleration. if the hammer is being swung at some acceleration then the force can be calculated by multiply that known acceleration with the 600 lbs. so more information must be known.

if the hammer is simply resting on the metal plate, then the acceleration would be 32.174 feet per square second (or 9.8 meters per square second) due to gravity. In this case the force would be equal to 19304.4 lb-ft/sec^2
