An aquarium tank is 1/6 full of water. When 2 gallons of water are added, the tank becomes 1/2 full. What is the total capacity of the aquarium tank, in gallons?

The tank capacity is 24 gallons

Explanation:

Let the tank capacity be c.

Then (1/6)c + 2 = (1/4)c, or (since the LCD is 12):

2c/12 + 24/12 =  3c/12, or

24/12 = c/12

Multiplying both sides by 12, we get:

24 = c

The tank capacity is 24 gallons.

I don't think so. Say the tank has x gallons. The tank capacity is 6x. Then x+2=3x, because 3(1/6)=1/2. Solve to get x=1, so the tank capacity is actually 6.

To be honest! I have the weird feeling ( not a bad one ) that you are correct thanks for pointing it out!
