 particular dress requires 3 1/4 yards of fabric for manufacturing. If the matching jacket requires 5/6  yard less fabric, how much fabric is needed for both pieces?

The jacket requires [3 + 1/4] - [5/6] =  [13/4] - [5/6]....the common denominator is 12, so the fractions become:

[39/12 - 10/12]   =  [29/12]  = [2 + 5/12]

So the total requirement is:

[3 + 1/4] + [2 + 5/12]    =   [3 + 3/12] + [ 2 + 5/12] = [5 +8/12] = [ 5 + 2/3]
