At a party, there were a total of 232 muffins and

chicken nuggets.

After the guests ate 3/5 of the muffins and 4/7 of the

nuggets, there were an equal number of muffins and

nuggets left.

(a)   How many muffins were left?

(b)   How many chicken nuggets were there at first?

Let the total number of muffins ==M

Let the total number of xhicken nuggets ==N

M   -  3/5M ==2/5M - muffins left

N    -  4/7N ==3/7N - chicken nuggets left

M  +  N ==232

2/5M  == 3/7N, solve for M, N

Use substitution to get:

M ==120,    N ==112

(a) 2/5 * 120 ==48 muffins left

(b) N ==112 - chicken nuggets at first.
