maybe they mean something like this

$$f(x)=-3(x)+5\\\\
\begin{tabular}{|c|c|c|c|c|}
\hline
$x$&1&2&3&4\\\hline
$f(x)$& \;&\; & \;& \;&\hline
\end{tabular}$$

This means

f(1)=-3*1+5=-3+5=2

so you put 2 in the box under the 1

Now you do the same with the other numbers.

well heres the basics a,b, and x and anyonther number is avariable youl be soving equations to find these unknow numbers ex. 1+x=3 we dont know what x is soooo do opsite to both sides +1+x=3

                                                                                                                      -1     -1 positeve and negitve one cancel each other out so we are left with x=2!! more avanced lessons are easily aviable on the interwebz
