If Tom and Tim are running at each other going 20 mph each, and they start out 25.5 miles apart, how do you use the geometric mean to find out the variable x in two similar right triangles?
First, you make a proportion that the variable can be a part of. For example, if x is a hypotenuse in one triangle and the shorter leg in another, the proportion would be like so: x/smaller triangle's short leg= larger triangle's hypotenuse/ x. I know this is complicated, but I hope it makes sense! (BTW, what's half of 25.5?)
