If the equation equals zero then this is how you do it:
1/2x - 5 + x - 10 = 0
(add 10 to both sides)
1/2x - 5 + x = 10
(add 5 to both sides)
1/2x + x = 15
(add the x's)
1 1/2x = 15
(divide both sides by 3/2 (1 1/2) or multiply both sides by 2/3)
x = 10
