In the figure, every region is a square.  If the yellow squares have area 1, then what is the area of the whole rectangle?

Yellow squares have area 1 so the sides  =  1

Which makes the purple squares sides     =  2

Which makes the brown squares sides      =  5

Area of brown squares .... 2 squares with area 52  each  =  2 • 25  =  50

Area of purple squares .... 2 squares with area 22  each  =  2 • 4   =    8

Area of yellow squares ....  2 squares with area 12  each  =  2 • 1   =    2

Add up all six areas ....                                                    total area  =   60 square units
