An airplane is heading north at an airspeed of 700 km/hr, but there is a wind blowing from the southwest at 80 km/hr.

The plane will end up flying ___?___ degrees off course
The plane's speed relative to the ground will be ___?__ km/hr

Can you help me fill in the blanks?

North direction components      700 km/hr       and    80 cos -45o      added = 756.57

SOuth component                                                     80 sin -45o                         = - 56.57

Degrees south of north =  arctan  -56.67/756.57 = -4.28 degrees toward south    or   4.28 degrees off course

Ground speed   =    sqrt (756.572 + (-56.572) ) =758.68 km/hr
