Two sides of an isosceles triangle are 10 inches and \(28\) inches.  What is the area of the triangle?

By the triangle inequality,  the  equal sides must be 28  and the base =  10

 

[ If the sides were 10, their sum would be less than  28  ]

 

The height  =      sqrt (28^2  - ( base length / 2 )^2  ]   =  sqrt  [ 784 - (5)^2 ]   = sqrt [ 784 - 25 ] =

 

sqrt [ 759  ] 

 

The area =     (1/2)(10) sqrt [ 759 ]  =   5 sqrt [ 759 ]   ≈   137.75 units^2
