y = 4x - 3    ...(1)

a) If  x  increases by 1 unit, what is the corresponding change in  y?

Let dy be the change in y. Then   y + dy = 4(x + 1) - 3   or   y + dy = 4x + 1   ...(2)

Subtract equation (1) from equation (2) to find dy.

b) If  x  decreases by 2 units, what is the corresponding change in  y?

Again let dy be the change in y.  Then  y + dy = 4(x - 2) - 3  or  y + dy = 4x -11   ...(3)

Subtract equation (1) from equation (3) to find dy
