The formula for the area of a triangle is:  A  =  (1/2) · base · height

The formula for the area of a parallelogram is:  A  =  base · height

 

Thus, if a triangle and a prarallelogram have the same sized bases and heights, the area of the parallelogram is twice the area of the triangle.
