Sorry my delta longitude is false.

\(\begin{array}{lcl} \Delta \lambda &=& 144.96^{\circ}E + 79.40^{\circ}W = 224.36^{\circ} \\ \Delta \varphi &=& 43.70^{\circ} -(-37.81^{\circ} ) = 43.70^{\circ} +37.81^{\circ} =81.51^{\circ} \end{array}\)

The two cities are degrees apart in latitude \(81.51^{\circ}\)

The two cities are degrees apart in longitude \(224.36^{\circ}\)

Toronto's Longitude is:79.40W

Melbourne's Longitude is:144.96E

Therefore they are 79.40 + 144.96=224.36 degrees apart

Toronto's latitude is:43.70N

Melbourne latitude is:-37.81S

Therefore they are 43.70 - (-37.81)=43.70 + 37.81=81.51 degrees apart.

The degrees apart in LONGITUDE depend on which direction you are measuring....the SMALLEST difference in LONGITUDE would be: (measuring Westward from Toronto to Melbourne)

(180 - 79.4E) + (180 - 144.96 W) = 135.64

Measuring the OTHER direction (Eastward from Toronro to Melbourne) would result in:

79.4E + 144.96W = 224.36

(note that the two answers add up to 360 !)
