can y be nagative?

if it could then x = 1 and 1 - 7 = -6

if not then x = 3 and 9 - 7 = 2

y  =  x^2  - 7

The  minimum  value  of  x^2  =  0

So

y  =  0  -  7   =   - 7   = the minimum  value  of  y
