Notice that we could have also just multiplied 24.80 by 88% (.88) since she got a 12% discount, but NinjaDevo's method might be a little more informtive if we were also interested in the size of the discount...!!!

First we need to find 12% of £24.80, then subtract that from the total cost to get the new price.

12% of £24.80       --- "of" means to multiply

12% x £24.80        ---12% can be written as a decimal by removing the percent and moving the decimal over two places to the left

0.12 x £24.80

£2.976            ---Round up

£2.98

 

So she got a £2.98 discount, but that isn't what she paid. To find what she paid, subtract 2.98 from 24.80.

24.80 - 2.98 = 21.82

 

She got the Easter hamper for £21.82.
