A line segment beginning point A(-2,5) and ending at B(6,-7) is drawn on a coordinate plane. Point C(0,2) is plotted on AB. What is the ratio of AC to BC?
A line segment beginning point A(-2,5) and ending at B(6,-7) is drawn on a coordinate plane. Point C(0,2) is plotted on AB. What is the ratio of AC to BC?
Distance from A to C = sqrt[ (-2 -0)^2 + (5 - 2)^2] = sqrt [ 4 + 9] = sqrt(13)
Distance from B to C = sqrt[ (6 - 0)^2 + ( -7 - 2)^2] = sqrt [ 36 + 81] = sqrt (117)
So the ratio of AB to BC = sqrt 13) / sqrt(117) = sqrt(13 / 117) = sqrt( 1/9) = 1/3
