For this problem you will need to know the formula of at least two shapes the square and the triangle can you state them as the following???
No, I mean what is the FORMULA for calculating the area of these two shapes?
You certainly can do it Hiy's way but there is an easier way.
This shape is what you in America call a Trapezoid
(we have a different name for it in Australia but I will not confuse you with that)
The area of a trapezoid = \(\frac{1}{2}* (sum \;of \;parallel\;sides\:)* perpendicular\;height\)
How long are the parallel sides?
What is the perpendicular height?
What is the area of this trapezoid?
Ok those P words - how confusing!
Parallel and Perpendicular.
Parallel Lines
what do you see in the middle ll
they look like railway tracks to me.
They are both going in the same direction!
Parallel lines are like train tracks just like the ll in the middle of the word shows you !
Parallel lines
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Perpendicular lines are the other ones. They are at right angles to each other.
Perpendicular lines
Well I see the triangle has a Perpendicular lines Because tHAT little triangle has a right angle
Ok Nicolas, try again,
How long are the parallel lines and what is the perpendicular height?
Then
What is the area?
No the parallel sides are the top and the bottom, They are running the same direction as each other.
So then if the Parrel lines are bottom and top then the top would be 14in and the bottom would be 15in and the Perpendicular line would be the back of the triangle and the bottom and that is in totall 10in so I am going to add them all up 14+15+10= 39in
I am so sorry I have to go now but we could save this and I can work with you tommorow night since your night is my morning.
No, the parallel lines are 14 and 18 (the top and the bottom)
the perpendicular height is 7
My way does the whole thing all at once Nickolas. You do not need to worry about seperating the triangle an anything like that.
I like it so far I always struggle with theses and now I know this is not that hard using
Mmm I can not see that you put that anywhere.
anyway, if you have to go I will see you later :)
