x - y = 36 (1)
4y - 3 = x (2)
Sub (2) into (1)
(4y - 3 ) - y = 36
3y - 3 = 36
3y = 36 + 3
3y = 39
y = 39 / 3 = 13 = smaller
And 4(13) - 3 = x = 52 - 3 = 49 = larger
