If I give my brother 5 dolalrs, then we will have the same amount of money. If instead he gives me 14 dollars, then I'll have twice as much money as he will have. How much money does my brother currently have (in dollars)?

B==Brother,    Y==You

Y - 5 == B + 5

Y + 14 ==2*[B - 14], solve for B, Y

B ==$52 - what your started with

Y ==$62 - what you started with.

$62 - $5 ==$52 + 5

   $57 == $57  If you gave your bother $5, both of you will have the same amount of money.

$62 + $14 ==2 * [52 - 14]

    $76 ==2 * $38 if your brother gave you $14, then you will have twice as much as he has.

So, after this transaction, you have:

$76  and  your brother has $38.
