The equation is 2x+13=17, find x:

Substract 13 on both sides:   2x=4

Divide by 2 on both sides:       x=2

(Check: if x=2, then 2x2+13=17)

Subsituting x=2 into the equation 3x+1 gives:

3x2+1=7
