In terms of pi, what is the area of the circle defined by the equation 2x^2+2y^2+10x-6y-48=x^2+y^2-2x+4y-10

First combine like terms: x^2 + y^2 + 12x - 10y - 38 = 0

Complete the square: x^2 + 12x + 36 - 36 + y^2 - 10y + 25 - 25 - 38 = 0   (doing this to obtain square of binomials, remember equation for circle)

(x + 6)^2 + (y - 5)^2 = 99 = r^2

Area of a circle = pi * r^2             =>        99pi
