x^2 + ax  - 8

Notice that since (x - 4)  is a factor   and the last term of the polynomial  is -8......the other factor must be (x + 2)

So

(x - 4) (x + 2)  =

x^2 -4x + 2x  - 8   =

x^2 -2x - 8

So

-2x  = ax

-2  = a

So  "a"  must be  - 2
