A composite figure is formed by combining a square and a triangle. Its total area is 60.5 ft2. The area of the triangle is 44.5 ft2. What is the length of each side of the square? Complete the explanation.

60.5-44.5=16

Area of a square is s^2 where s is the side length

\sqrt(16) = 4

Side length = 4

Note, DS :

 

The area left for the square must be  [60.5 - 44.5]ft^2   = 16 ft^2

 

So....the area of a square = side^2

 

So we have

 

side^2  = 16     take the square root of each sides

 

side = 4 ft
