The difference between two numbers is 36. Four times the smaller is equal to 3 more than the larger. What are the numbers?     

 

L – S = 36     

4S = L + 3     —>  L = 4S – 3     substitute into other equation     

 

                                   (4S – 3) – S  =  36     

                                                  3S  =  39     

                                                    S  =  13     

 

                                              L – S  =  36     

                                              L – 13  =  36     

                                                      L  =  49

                 4S  = L + 3     

Does  (4)(13)  =  49 + 3     

                  52  =  49 + 3     

                  52  =  52    True
