John and Jack divided their math homework. John solved twice as many problems as Jack, plus one more problem. How many problems did each boy solve if there are 28 assigned problems?
Let the number that Jack solved = N
Then John solved 2N + 1
So
N + 2N + 1 = 28
3N = 28 - 1
3N = 27
N = 27 / 3 = 9 = number Jack solved
2(9) + 1 = 19 = number John solved
